The Railroad Hobby Show started as a small "Bring & Buy" railroad swap meet on the University of Massachusetts campus In the early 1960s.

The Railroad Hobby Show moved from the University of Massachusetts campus to the Eastern States Exposition fairgrounds In 1982 when university space was unavailable because of building renovations.

Twice, the Railroad Hobby Show has received the Walther’s Showmanship Award in recognition of our efforts to promote interest in the railroads and model railroad hobbies.

The Amherst Railway Society was formed in the 1950s on the campus of the University of Massachusetts. Today, the organization is based in Palmer, Massachusetts, the historic home of seven railroads.

The Railroad Hobby Show and the BIG E Agricultural Fair are two different shows - both held at the Eastern States Exposition fair grounds in West Springfield, Massachusetts.

Since 1991, proceeds from the Railroad Hobby Show have enabled the Amherst Railway Society to donate $814,373 to railroad restoration and preservation project all over the country.
